Take Orders on WhatsApp in Kenya and Get Paid With M-Pesa

Plenty of shops in Kenya already sell on WhatsApp. A customer messages, the owner replies, someone asks for the till number, and an M-Pesa message is forwarded as proof. It works when you are small. It breaks when ten customers write at once, or when you are asleep.

What does a good WhatsApp order flow look like?

Four steps, with as little typing as possible for the customer:

  1. The customer asks. They send a list, a photo of a list or a voice note.
  2. The shop answers with a basket. Every item is matched to your catalog, priced and added up. The customer sees the total before they commit.
  3. The customer pays. One tap on Checkout sends an M-Pesa prompt to their phone.
  4. The order is confirmed. The chat shows it as paid, with the delivery time, and your team sees the order with its payment attached.

How does M-Pesa checkout work inside WhatsApp?

With M-Pesa payment integration, the Checkout button in the chat starts an M-Pesa request for the exact basket total. The customer enters their PIN on their own phone. There are no till numbers to copy and no screenshots to check, because the payment is matched to the order automatically.

What about orders that arrive when you are closed?

Customers write at night and on Sundays. When the basket and the payment prompt are automatic, the order is waiting for you in the morning, already paid. The shop is open whenever the customer is. You decide your delivery hours and policies once, and they are used in every chat.

Do you need a website to do this?

No. The chat is the shop. If you also have a Shopify or WooCommerce store, WowCommerce connects to it, but a store is not required. We cover the trade-offs in WhatsApp shop or website: what a Kenyan retailer actually needs.

What goes wrong most often?

  • Prices in the chat that no longer match the shelf.
  • Customers writing the same product ten different ways.
  • Payments you cannot match to an order.
  • Nobody watching the chat in the busy hour.

A system that reads the catalog, prices the basket and ties the payment to the order removes the first three. A shared view of the chat for your team handles the fourth.

Where to start

Look at how WowCommerce sells inside WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, then book a demo. We will build a basket from one of your customers' real lists so you can see the flow with your own products.
